How To Dress For Early Fall

Especially if you live somewhere warm, early fall can be a tricky time to get dressed! I’ve got some ideas…

I feel it incumbent upon me to mention that it is still *technically* summer. Children being back in school & barn jackets everywhere on your socials to the contrary, it is still flipping HOT, especially, for example, if you live in the South.

But fall shopping season is upon us & some fabulous lines are dropping! I hate hate hate when something I love sells out because I wasn’t ready for it. But also, when I get new clothes, I kind of want to wear them, like, right now? I was the child who wore her shiny Mary Janes home from the shoe store. About brand-new things, I have zero chill.

So what’s a fall shopping, hot weather dwelling gal to do? I have some ideas, and they all begin with a great blouse, something with a little volume, some feminine details & the versatility to be worn with shorts & sandals now as well as jeans & a blazer down the road.

Start with a *great* blouse.

I’m always a sucker for feminine details like pleating, puffed sleeves & soft volume. This Ann Mashburn “Sienna” fits the bill perfectly. I sized up one size as I typically do in AM!

Early Fall OOTD

Wear your great blouse now with pleated shorts to balance out the volume, an on-trend fall accessory like statement earrings, a basket bag (because it’s still technically summer!) & chic black gladiator sandals.

The Fall Shorts Edit

Shorts that can transition into fall are a little roomier, with either more length or some volume from pleating. My fellow warm-weather dwellers: we will be wearing these for months!

A Tisket, A Tasket

Everyone LOVES my basket bag which is from (I kid you not) Target back when they used to have cool shit. I’ve found you some excellent alternatives, however...

An Unexpected Shoulder Season Staple

Random, but I always love black sandals for shoulder season dressing. They feel less summer-y, a nod towards the darker tones of fall apparel to come. Have & love this Ancient Greek Sandals pair!

As the weather cools, style the same blouse with your favorite jeans, a blazer tossed over your shoulders & on-trend flats like mary janes in a chic oxblood hue. You can shop the whole look here!

Been workshopping this look. Into it.

About That Blazer…

Wear the same blouse even later on (I know!) with a tissue turtleneck layered underneath, your favorite black trousers, a classic trench & some animal print flats for FUN. Shop the edit here!
