HDF’s Fall Wishlist

Everything I'm in the market for this Fall shopping season. Some pieces are on-trend (suede! belts! oxblood!) but all of them are classic enough to find a home in your forever wardrobe.

I find it completely fascinating that we all write to-do lists & grocery lists & plan our schedules with care, but when it comes to filling our closets, we kind of just wing it? We see something online & buy it on a lark! We go shopping & purchase whatever makes us feel sparkly that particular day!

And not to be a nag about it, but we should really stop doing this. If we need a list for buying a lemon that costs $.60, then we definitely need one for buying a coat or a pair of boots! Just like menu planning, think ahead to the events on your calendar — parties, work trips, sporting events, whatevs — and work backwards, developing a list based on what you’re going to need. Consider your closet & where the gaps actually are — sure, it’s fun to buy a pretty new party dress, but do you maybe need to focus on restocking great basics instead? If we’re curating forever wardrobes & not just acquiring stuff, a plan is essential.

With that in mind, I’m giving you a peek at my shopping wishlist for this fall season…

  1. A classic belted camel coat. This is the splurge of the season I’m currently contemplating. My heart wants this one from Weekend Max Mara, but perhaps this charming Emerson Fry toggle coat is more practical?

  2. A pale blue poplin button-down. How do I not have one of these already? Looking at a Frank & Eileen style I already have and love in white & this ruffled Nili Lotan that is SO me.

  3. Collectible sweaters. You get what you pay for has never been truer than in the sweater category. I’m very focused on collecting quality pieces in classic silhouettes, like this cashmere crewneck from Eleanor Leftwich Collection and this pure cotton turtleneck from State of Cotton.

  4. A fresh pair of chic sneaks. My Golden Goose sneakers are ready to be put out to pasture after three years of being worn hard. I am eyeing the cool girl sneaker of choice from Isabel Marant as well as (sorry not sorry) a fresh pair of Golden Goose kicks. Or are these faux croc Nike Dunks kind of rad?

  5. Oxblood flats. A moody riff on the classic cherry red flat. Have & love these Dolce Vita mary janes & I also love the dainty silhouette of these Doen slingbacks.

  6. An olive puffer vest. Ideal for layering over Breton shirts, button-downs & creamy sweaters, this is what you’ll be wearing to walk your pooch & run to the store & apple pick adorably with your children. I’m liking the look of these options from Tuckernuck & Dudley Stephens.

  7. Statement earrings. After many years of sticking to classic studs, I’m feeling the need to mix up my earring collection a tiny bit. These scarab earrings are SO cool & how do I not own gold hoops?

  8. My current favorite jeans in a new wash. I love the Slvrlake Grace Crops so much I’m thinking I need a second pair in a darker, more-fall & winter appropriate wash.

  9. A leather belt. When was the last time I owned a belt that didn’t tie with a bow? I truly can’t say, but the return of the leather belt is a welcome development, no? This Nili Lotan “Louise” belt is classic & will truly go with everything.

  10. A spare, 90’s inspired heel. These black satin Saint Laurent heels are at the tippy-top of my lust list.

  11. A just-short-of-cocktail fanciness black dress. My closet is basically a garden of floral dresses. I am not mad at this, just to be clear, but the absence of a chic, black, day-to-night dress is a major wardrobe gap. Currently looking at the Doen “Ischia”, the La Ligne “Andie” dress (back in stock!) & this v. cool, wrap style from a new-to-me New Zealand-based brand, Harris Tapper.

  12. A pretty brown handbag. Extra points if it can be worn cross-body, as I will be traveling next month! I really like this suede Demellier bag and this leather APC style, but this Mark Cross “Romy” clutch. Oh my.
