Our love affair with pearls began at the tender (or in our case, precocious) age of seven when we were presented with a dainty strand that had once belonged to our great-grandmother. We remember being struck by their precious delicacy and the way their subtle glimmer made us feel suddenly prettier and very, very grown up. We also recall being carefully instructed to wear them often because regular contact with our skin would keep the pearls supple and prevent tiny cracks from developing (especially important with vintage strands).
Many years later, we have taken that instruction and run with it, wearing that heirloom necklace and every other piece of pearl jewelry we own with devoted frequency. Our collection of pearl jewelry has grown since that long ago gift, and we are always on the lookout for new pieces we simply can’t live without. Here are some of the loveliest pearls P&V has spotted as of late:
Lately we’ve been wearing opera length pearls with a tunic-length tee, jeans and ladylike ballerina flats. Wearing pearls in this easy, unaffected way reminds us of everything we loved about Carrie’s style on “Sex and the City” (minus that absurd “Carrie” necklace and her penchant for rompers). When it comes to pearl strands, the price range is vast, from affordable options at J. Crew to aspirational stunners at Mikimoto (pictured above).
Remember when we mentioned that a pop of neon was the perfect way to update one’s spring wardrobe? Consider that accent piece found with this electric yellow lace-and-pearl headband that is equal parts classic and cool.
We are really into large diameter pearls right now — perhaps to balance out our excessively chubby pregnant face? — and these 9 mm Akoya pearl earrings are pretty much a home run. Bows and pearls together on the same piece? Head. Just. Exploded.
Costume jewelry has its place in every lady’s arsenal of accessories and there are some lovely examples featuring faux pearls. We tend to think that costume jewelry looks best worn en masse and this multi-strand bracelet from J. Crew fits the bill perfectly. Isn’t it sweet? We can just picture tossing it on with everything from jeans to evening gowns. (Special note to brides-to-be: This bracelet would make a brilliant gift for bridesmaids.)
Speaking of multi-strand costume jewelry, how cool is this layered piece from Juliet & Company? While it certainly reads more punk than classic, this necklace would be a fantastic way to transition a basic sheath dress from office day to cocktail hour.
We were combing the pages of the Wisteria catalogue for decor items when we stumbled across this fun little bracelet that reminds us of a similar piece we purchased years ago while vacationing in Montepulciano. Pearls can be casual, and this charming jute-and-freshwater-pearl piece is a perfect example. We can already picture wearing it with a blindingly bright polo, narrow bermuda shorts and Jack Rogers sandals for roaming around Lake Tahoe this summer.
It’s never too early to start one’s collection, so we are already swooning over this dear child’s pearl bracelet for the little lady. Cue the chorus of “awwwwwww”‘s…
