You guys, all of a sudden my kids have actual extracurricular schedules and it’s freaking me out a little. Keeping track of their registration forms and preschool in-service days and play date calendars? I’m 67% certain I’m going to forget to pick one of them up somewhere and 100% certain my dinner game is headed for takeout town.
But I want to fight the power, I really do, which is why I decided to design some kind of centralized family organizational system. Apparently the Pinterest set calls them “Family Command Centers”? (I CAN’T EVEN.)
We laid the foundation by painting a sad, blank wall at the back of our kitchen with black chalkboard paint. Now what? Bulletin boards? Backpack hooks? Wall-mounted file cabinets? Thankfully, I am not the first flipped out mom to think of this, so inspiration abounds.
These are the best of the best:
Because I’m a hard-copy girl in an electronic world, this handwritten quarterly calendar with clipboards for each kid is speaking my language, yo.
Menu planner, electronics charging stations, key hooks, a memo board, and, uh, house plants? Is there anything this command center doesn’t have?!
Here’s the thing: I prefer my DIY projects not to look like I’m a Michael’s VIP shopper, if you know what I mean. This is a terrific example of a command center that’s chic and functional with zero kitsch. (Ironically, this concept WAS DESIGNED BY HOBBY LOBBY.)
Managing the tidal wave of preschool art is an ongoing battle that (I hope) a command center will address. Our DIY washi tape gallery was fun for a spell, but I’m craving something with more impact like this stunning red framed gallery.
Because streamlining menu planning is a key element of my ideal command center, placing cookbook shelving adjacent to the command center is all kinds of brilliant.
Also, I don’t care to be in charge of remembering every single grocery need my husband shouts at me in passing. WRITE IT ON THE WHITEBOARD, DUDE.
Many family command centers incorporate inspirational go-getter quotes about working hard and making good choices. Yeah, I’m not that mom. I am, however, 100% down with the motivational message on this 🖕🏻 Schoolhouse Electric Company & Supply banner.
